The outfit's DCP-2000 JPEG2000 Digital Cinema Server has been "approved as a licensee of Dolby 3D Digital Cinema, giving exhibitors even more options when screening 3D content." As it stands, Doremi's DCP-2000 servers are already installed in over 5,500 screens across the globe, and thanks to its interoperability, it ought to have no qualms with the third-dimension.
Doremi Cinema lands licensing deal with Dolby 3D originally appeared on Engadget HD on Sat, 22 Nov 2008 02:40:00 EST. IP Vision's latest set-top-box is quite the interesting character, being completely carrier-independent and boasting no subscription fees whatsoever. The unit includes an HDD for storing up to 40 hours of content, a Freeview tuner, an export-to-USB feature (read: external storage support) and the ability to tap into a wide library of video-on-demand content. Speaking of the latter (FetchTV), users can suck down material from Paramount, ITV, Turner Broadcasting, Eagle Vision, Fremantle, Entertainment Rights and Aardman, with movies priced between £1.99 and £3.50 and other shows costing £0.29 to £1.99. The unit itself can be purchased now for £149.99 (or £129.99 for a limited time) -- tell us, UKers, is this something you might be interested in?

[Via TechDigest]
FetchTV STB bundles Freeview and HD VOD support originally appeared on Engadget HD on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 23:33:00 EST.
After staying in the double digits in regards to market share for all of November, for the second week in the row Blu-ray only manages just under 10% of the top 20 home media market share, according to Nielsen VideoScan courtesy of Home Media Magazine. The good news for Blu-ray is that sales were up 83.49 percent to over $20 million, which is up from about $11 million last week. The fact that Blu-ray didn't manage more of the market is what we'll refer to the panda affect. While we're not exactly sure how well Kung Fu Panda did on Blu-ray -- because the title market share chart only listed the top 10 this week -- last week it was less than 6 percent. Assuming this trend continued, and the fact that the panda movie held the number one and number three position on the DVD charts, it appears Blu-ray's number one title, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, was no match for it. Next week we'd be willing to bet we see much of the same because while WALL-E has a much broader appeal then animated fighting bears, it probably won't be enough to break Blu over 10 percent all on its own.

One thing's for sure: Verizon is well aware of the importance of online video, and it's doing everything within its power to make sure it stays one step ahead of the curve. Hot on the heels of its recently announced Starz Play deal comes this, a similar agreement with a UK-based digital asset-delivery network provider. The agreement with Velocix puts Verizon in a position to "offer content owners and video distributors a competitive choice in delivering their services to our broadband customers." More specifically, the two have worked together to "offer content owners and video distributors a competitive choice in delivering their services to broadband customers," which leads us to believe that all sorts of new internet-based content could soon be coming to FiOS / FiOS TV customers. It's okay to be a wee bit giddy, we won't tell.
Verizon lands video distribution deal with Velocix originally appeared on Engadget HD on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 21:06:00 EST. Toshiba's XD-E500 has already taken the US and UK (among other locales) by storm, but outside of Japan, no one in Asia has yet been able to bask in the glory of this unit's peerless upscaling technology. Until now, that is. Said deck has just made its way down to Singapore, and it's reportedly selling for S$199 (or about $133 in American greenbacks). Some may say that's a fair price to ask for something that makes vanilla DVDs look better than the director ever intended, but we're sort of dismayed that no free movie rentals are thrown in here. While we here at Engadget HQ ponder a week-long excursion to the splendorous island of Grand Cayman, we can't help but be swayed even closer to pulling the trigger after reading this news. WestTel, along with suits from WestStar TV and ABC Trenching, has just broke ground on a $15 million, seven-year initiative to bring fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) to the only Cayman island with an international airport. The first phase will focus simply on establishing a fiber infrastructure amongst corporations, initially from Television Centre to Camana Bay, then up West Bay Road to Governors Square. Phase two will see the deployment of HDTV and high-speed internet / voice services to residences along West Bay Road, while followup phases will string it to the rest of the island. We just made your vacation plans a whole lot easier, didn't we?
WestTel bringing FTTP to Grand Cayman originally appeared on Engadget HD on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 19:06:00 EST. The path to Netflix-enhanced glory hasn't been entirely trouble free for everyone, this time it's posters on AVForum noticing a distinct lack of audio on Xbox 360s connected to their HDTV by HDMI. So far suggested solutions for the afflicted include plugging in the hard drive while the system is on, or waiting several minutes before switching the monitor to HDMI, and repeating them every time the system is started. It's not the first time we've heard of UK-centric HDMI weirdness, any of you hearing a whole lot of nothing while gaming (that's not attributable to hard drive installs)?

[Via Xbox 360 Fanboy]
NXE creating HDMI headaches for UK Xbox 360 owners? originally appeared on Engadget HD on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 18:33:00 EST. We hate to laugh at a situation like this, but it's just too easy. While Disney (and everyone else) fights to keep fraudulent Blu-ray Discs out of the Chinese market, said studio is also fighting another outlet of piracy: a website in which it holds a stake. In an admittedly bizarre twist of fate, Disney has discovered that several full-length, high-quality bootlegs of Wall-E were posted up at 56.com, a site which Disney's venture-capital affiliate, Steamboat Ventures, invested in just two years ago. We always heard that expecting someone to play by the rules when the only rule was lawlessness was a touch insane -- case in point, no?
Disney battles with piracy on affiliate website originally appeared on Engadget HD on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 18:22:00 EST. It was already made clear that both HDMI and DVI have a struggle on their hands with DisplayPort entering the picture, but new research from In-Stat asserts that HDMI is still on the up and up while DVI is slowing fading away. The report found that HDMI sockets were included on a staggering 95% of all digital televisions shipped worldwide in 2008, which unsurprisingly goes down as "the greatest volume for HDMI in any product." It also found that the "vast majority" of DVI shipments occurred in PC and PC peripheral markets, noting that DVI-enabled product shipments would decline at an annual rate of 30% through 2012; in the same breath, we're told that HDMI-enabled product shipments would increase at an annual clip of 23% over the same period. Now, if only this research would have included DisplayPort, we'd really have ourselves a showdown.

[Via CNET]
Research shows HDMI climbing, DVI slipping originally appeared on Engadget HD on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 17:11:00 EST. Wireless iPod docks were all the rage back in 2006 (seriously, we remember nerds camping out for them), but the trend sort of petered out as 2007 emerged and focus turned to more important matters. Now, Marantz is looking to bring it all back in style with the IS301, a Lucullan wireless iPod dock that transmits both audio and video sans cabling and includes a port-filled receiver for tight-knit home theater integration. Practically every dock-connecting iPod (no iPhones allowed, at least not officially) will work fine here, and there's also Bluetooth 2.1 support for receiving and beaming tunes from BT-enabled devices. Expect the bundle to storm Japan in January for ¥26,250 ($277), after which we Americans will drop down on bended knee and plead for a US version.

[Via Impress]

Gallery: Marantz's IS301 wireless iPod dock elegantly cuts the cord

Marantz's IS301 wireless iPod dock elegantly cuts the cord originally appeared on Engadget HD on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 16:19:00 EST. Coming at you straight from Shockville is this tidbit: a report claiming that DVD sales are also hitting the skids, along with practically everything in the world save for milk, bread and diamond-clad cellphones. In fact, DVD sales on the whole are down 4% for the year, with the biggest drop occurring in October; it's also noted that Blu-ray sales, according to Warner, will "miss sales projections for the year by 25%." Interestingly, we're told that the slumping economy isn't the only aspect to blame, as media companies are purportedly "dumping more obscure titles on the market, leading to downward pricing pressure," according to Distribution Video and Audio. Of course, we're also informed that digital downloads could be cutting into sales, but even during the down times, the DVD business is still outperforming a whole gaggle of other sectors. Don't cry so soon, DVD, as Black Friday is still to come.

DVD sales also feeling the pinch, down 4% on the year originally appeared on Engadget HD on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 15:54:00 EST. After kvetching during the holiday season two years ago about how rampant price drops were wrecking the industry, the still-insane Jay Vandenbree, president of consumer sales for Sony Electronics, has opened his mouth once again this year. Why? To say that by "having the price for these products [HDTVs, for one] be the same at all retailers, Sony had eliminated stress for buyers." In case you weren't aware, Sony has forbid retailers from discounting select high-end HDTVs and cameras, but it's doing so for you, the buyer (honest!). In fact, he stated that because of Sony's heartwarming efforts, "consumers don't have to worry about whether [they] can get a better deal at retailer A or retailer B, and everybody gets the best deal." While RPTVs teeter on a bellbottom-styled return to the mainstream, Sharp and Nichia are focused squarely on the future. The two have just entered into a LED patent cross-licensing agreement covering both LEDs and laser diodes; the deal grants each company the right to use "inventions related to LEDs and laser diodes covered by the vast number of patents owned by the respective companies in Japan and in major countries." The release gets interesting when touching on Sharp's intentions -- it states that the company is hoping to "create unique, one-of-a-kind products in the future that feature both devices [Blu-ray recorders and LED lighting] at their core." Color us very intrigued.
Sharp and Nichia link up for LED patent cross-licensing deal originally appeared on Engadget HD on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 13:45:00 EST. It's a feature we've been clamoring for as long as we can remember -- high-def on YouTube -- and it's about to happen. Thanks to a few curious YouTube browsers, a simple URL hack revealed that the online video site already has the ability to host and play back 720p clips, and better still, some users are reporting that surround sound is also in the works. Wired is claiming that YouTube has confirmed that this discovery is part of the site's efforts to test out different video formats, and with rivals like Viddyou already up to 1080p, it's about flippin' time. We can't say for sure when YouTube HD will roll out in official form, but you should definitely hit the read link and check the embedded vids; the top one is 720p, the bottom is the standard pixel-fest. We dare you to not be amazed at the difference.

[Via NewTeeVee]
YouTube "hack" reveals HD / surround sound testing originally appeared on Engadget HD on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 13:23:00 EST. And just like that, another mainstay in the flat-panel world is forced to make significant business changes to deal with drooping demand and a bizarre economy. Shortly after Sharp announced that it would likely be cutting LCD panel production by around 10%, in flies word that Panasonic is making an even more drastic move. Currently, the outfit produces 65-inch plasma panels at a plant in Ibaraki, while all other sizes are concocted at two factories in Amagasaki. Starting soon, all sizes will be made at the pair of plants in Amagasaki, a move that will supposedly cut production costs by up to ¥4 billion ($41.92 million) per year. Panny is hoping to use the Ibaraki venue to "concentrate [on] development and testing of flat-panels," which follows logic given its intentions to spark up a "development segment for LCD panels there next fiscal year."
Panasonic to move all plasma panel production to two facilities originally appeared on Engadget HD on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 13:19:00 EST. You knew it was coming, didn't you? Given that the LED-backlit 42PFL9803H just went on sale across the pond a few weeks back, it was only a matter of time before someone got their grubby paws around it and snapped a few photos. ElectricPig managed to do just that, and aside from giving us a look at the new set, they also stated that it was practically as good -- if not better -- that Pioneer's KURO in terms of contrast. 'Course, that's exactly what Philips was aiming for all along, but it's good to hear we've finally got some competition in the darkness space, regardless. It has already taken Dubai, Las Vegas and now-sunk Somali pirate ships by storm, but Sharp's 108-inch behemoth has yet to officially launch in Australia... until now. Yep, starting today, Aussies with AU$169,000 to burn can order up their very own LB-1085, which offers a viewing area of around 3.2 square meters and a native 1080p resolution. The only question that remains is: how much is delivery to Cockatoo Island?
Sharp's 108-inch LCD HDTV goes Down Under originally appeared on Engadget HD on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 12:15:00 EST. It's missing the nearly iconic glossy black bezel that has become such an expectation on Samsung displays, but the SyncMaster 2494HS would still be welcome at our cluttered work desk. The 23.6-inch panel sports an all-business, matte black motif with a native 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, 300 nits of brightness, a 5-millisecond response time, 50,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, inbuilt stereo speakers and DVI / VGA / HDMI inputs. The LCD is expected to go on sale in Japan next month for around ¥40,000 ($423), but if we were the betting type (an we're not), we'd expect it to roll onto fresh, moist US soil in due time.

[Via Impress]
Samsung shows clean lines on 1080p SyncMaster 2494HS LCD originally appeared on Engadget HD on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 11:39:00 EST. Humax told us that its awfully cute 320GB Freesat+ Foxsat-HDR would be on sale this month, and sure enough, it's filtering into quality retailers across the UK. According to T3, users looking for "free" high-def via Freesat+ can waltz on into John Lewis, Comet, Argos or Dixons in order to trade £299 for the box you see pictured above. From there, you'll also need to grab a dish, an HDTV and an installer, but those are just details, right?
Humax's 320GB Freesat+ Foxsat-HDR now on sale originally appeared on Engadget HD on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 11:34:00 EST. During his trip, he saw the DirecTV HDPC-20 in action alongside a smorgasbord of other gear, some identifiable and some not so much. Speaking of Microsoft, we talk about the Xbox Experience and the appearance of HD Netflix's Watch Instantly titles -- the selection isn't great yet, but the quality is there. This move really gives Xbox 360 a leg up on the competition, and Microsoft's Shane Kim (no relation to Steve, by the way) crowed about that this week; and our readers seemed to agree with him in this week's Ask Engadget feature. DISH will let you add USB storage to its ViP211 DVR for a "mere" $40, which while pricey is still better than a stick in the eye. And that's exactly what the newspaper editor who claims he can't see an improvement in Blu-ray picture quality must have caught, in our opinion. We admit that even price cuts may not be making Blu-ray decks fly off the shelves, but picture quality isn't a valid reason to hold off on the purchase. Apparently, people don't feel that being "bound" to physical media is a reason to nix Blu-ray, either, as this week's MOTO (master of the obvious) survey finds that people actually prefer discs to streaming. That's good news for Oppo's rumored BDP-83 Blu-ray player; but even if it decodes every format under the sun, a pricetag upwards of $400 might put a damper on things. Netflix has officially declared the format war is over, and will stop carrying HD DVDs in mid-December. No week would be complete without mention of VUDU, this time the rack-mountable XL2 version gets mention on the podcast. LCD prices are definitely in a free-fall, but we wonder what they would be if not for the price fixing that LG and Sharp admitted to. No such luck for those hoping to join club KURO, however, as Pioneer's rebranding of Black Friday as "KURO Friday" rings utterly hollow.

Get the podcast

The carrier has just upgraded its SeaChange VOD infrastructure in order to "dramatically expand" its HD video-on-demand offerings, and on top of that, it's also hoping to launch a Start Over-type service to help those who notoriously show up late for their favorite show. Better still, the company is looking to expand its linear HD lineup by adding in 15 to 25 new ones over the next 9 to 12 months. Pretty big words for a "small" provider -- guess we'll have to wait and see if it delivers.
Buckeye Cable gearing up for HD VOD, Start Over-type service originally appeared on Engadget HD on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 10:28:00 EST. It's impossible to say just how legitimate all of this is right now, but the writing has been on the wall for months. We already knew that AT&T was laying down hundreds of millions of dollars for fiber improvements in the Carolinas, and we've already seen dodgy job ads and U-verse cabinets in the central region of NC. Now, we're really beginning to feel it. A number of locals in the Triangle have spotted AT&T trucks casually passing through, and upon asking, were told that U-verse services were planned for certain areas as early as December. More specifically, we're hearing that Cary, NC could be serviced first, though there's no word on when the Triangle / Triad at large would have the option to switch. And maybe it's completely coincidental, but TWC managed to go a lifetime without adding a substantial amount of high-def stations in these very areas -- now that competition's (possibly) rolling into town, we're finally seeing some effort put forth.

[Via The Wolf Web]
AT&T eying December launch of U-verse in Cary, NC? originally appeared on Engadget HD on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 09:45:00 EST. There's no doubt that the CEA and NTIA have been spreading the word about the 2009 digital TV transition as hard as they can, but some folks still aren't taking the time to listen. 'Course, 62% is way better than what we've seen in the past, but that still leaves a full third of OTA-reliant American households sans a government-issued voucher with under 100 days to go until analog slides under the guillotine. Currently, 17 million homes have requested 33.5 million coupons (in other words, most folks are requesting the maximum of two) and 13.5 million have been redeemed. For those with a strange curiosity to know even more, it's stated that a number of eastern cities have the highest coupon application rates, while folks in Hawaii and Alaska could apparently care less. That said, we understand that not everyone will be able to jet off to Las Vegas to see his December 6th matchup with Manny Pacquia, but those with AT&T's U-verse will be treated to The Dream Match in glistening high-def. 'Course, the pricing is apt to make you consider just visiting a bar ($65 for the HD PPV, $55 for the SD PPV), but who knows how inflated that tab could be by the end of the night. There's some serious competition for HD eyes in Columbus. Locals can choose from Wide Open West, AT&T, Time Warner Cable and Insight, and it's obvious the latter is looking to stay ahead of the pack when it comes to HD options. Tipster Joshua has chimed in to let us know that Insight Digital 4.0 has been unleashed upon the Ohio city, bringing with it too many high-def channels to count. If you're ready to be impressed, hop on past the break and scroll, scroll, scroll.

[Thanks, Joshua]
Continue reading Insight Digital 4.0 brings wheelbarrow full of HD stations to Columbus, OH

Insight Digital 4.0 brings wheelbarrow full of HD stations to Columbus, OH originally appeared on Engadget HD on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 04:08:00 EST. Located at 8835 Columbia 100 Parkway in Suite B, the store offers up a "home theater setting where shoppers can relax in plush chairs and see for themselves what all the excitement is about as they experience FiOS TV on high-definition TVs." Better still, subscribers can swap or drop off FiOS TV set-top-boxes / remotes at the store, and they can even phone up friends in the southeast and brag about their proximity to the service. And you know they (you) will.
Verizon gives patrons a taste of FiOS TV / internet in new Columbia, MD store originally appeared on Engadget HD on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 02:10:00 EST. For anyone's who has tried to connect ZeeVee's ZvBox, we commend you if you've managed to avoid calling technical support at least once. Although we're (mostly) kidding there, there's no denying that the aforesaid unit is one of the more complicated devices to install and get running. Thankfully, ZeeVee has inked a contract with Inforonics to provide extended hours of tech support, meaning that you really can get your install issues dealt with at 3:17AM. As always, YMMV when calling in at such bizarre hours, but at least you'll have a warm body to talk with even if the troubleshooting is a bust, right?
ZeeVee technical support: now open at really weird hours originally appeared on Engadget HD on Thu, 20 Nov 2008 23:53:00 EST.
